Discover the history, vision, and people behind A Fling Called Swing: a movement where art, music, and volunteering come together to transform communities.
A Fling Called Swing (AFCS) is born from the legacy of Donkey Caravan, a traveling art project that brought music, color, and smiles to rural towns and European cities from 2010 to 2019. What began as mural art evolved into a powerful platform for connection, joy, and community spirit.
In response to the emotional toll of the COVID-19 pandemic, DeAmicitia — a Spanish NGO with over 25 years of experience — created AFCS as a vibrant intergenerational initiative combining swing music, Lindy Hop, and collaborative arts to bring joy to elderly people and meaningful experiences to young volunteers.

Each edition partners with municipalities, hospitals, care centers, and European organizations to promote emotional wellbeing through artistic volunteering. From murals to concerts and dance workshops, AFCS fosters real, human encounters across generations and borders.
Behind the scenes is a diverse team of coordinators, artists, technicians, volunteers, and healthcare professionals working together to make every interaction meaningful. Our strength lies in a solid collaborative network that includes local governments like Altea, Denia, l'Alfàs del Pi, clinics such as IMED Levante, and international partners like YAP Italy.
The strength of this project lies in its local and international partnerships:
Donkey Caravan – touring with art and music (2010–2019)
Ignacio – president of De Amicitia
De Amicitia was founded in 1998 as a small non-profit association in the Marina Alta region with a clear mission: to prove that youth volunteering and non-formal education could bring real change to rural areas. Its early years focused on environmental conservation workcamps and heritage restoration projects in small towns across Alicante, where young people from all over Europe learned side by side with local communities. In 2010, the organization took a creative leap with Donkey Caravan, a mountain tour combining hiking and live music, laying the foundation for the fusion of nature and art that now defines its work.

De Amicitia soon joined the Alliance Volunteer Network and, in 2014, received Erasmus+ accreditation (E10014498) to coordinate youth exchanges and long-term volunteering projects. Thanks to this experience, in 2019 the organization launched “The Clandestine Solidarity Swing Band Tour” (ESC 2018-1-ES02-ESC31-012540), a pilot funded by INJUVE that brought a swing band to nursing homes across the region. The initiative was so successful that it secured renewed support from municipalities and hospitals like IMED.
Between 2020 and 2024, De Amicitia was recognized in Brussels with the Startup Europe Award for “Best Non-Profit Organization” and established strategic partnerships with local governments, hospitals, and cultural networks, strengthening its intergenerational volunteering model. Today, with over 23 years of experience, hundreds of completed workcamps, and thousands of trained volunteers, the association launches “A Fling Called Swing (AFCS)” — an ambitious 36-month project combining concerts, collaborative murals, and ecological gardens to help heal the effects of post-COVID isolation in older and vulnerable communities. It reflects the best of De Amicitia’s legacy: interculturalism, purpose-driven art, and deep social commitment.
